The Cubs transaction log shows Kevin Alcantara being optioned to Iowa without a corresponding move, so that means some position player will be added today ahead of the Reds series. Any chance it’s Matt Shaw returning from his rehab assignment, which seemed to go off without a hitch? The swap would make sense, as Shaw had been heavily used as a righty bat for the outfield, who also would run late in games (which is how Alcantara was used (at most)). As I’ve said, it’ll be very interesting to see how things are coordinated with Dansby Swanson out and Pedro Ramirez having otherwise been starting regularly at second base, plus Tyrone Taylor now having arrived to platoon in the outfield. Will Shaw eat into Ramirez’s time at second? Taylor’s time in left? My guess is Shaw will take some starts at second against lefties, at a minimum, but there might be a lot of mixing and matching otherwise. I don’t think we can say for sure that Ramirez absolutely projects to be better than Shaw at the plate and at second base on any given day, but Ramirez has acquitted himself so well as a rookie. As for Alcantara, he’s received just 28 total plate appearances this year, despite all his time up and down. Can’t say I’m judging the lack of production (or even the 39.3% K rate) too harshly in a situation like that, given how hard it would be to get in any kind of rhythm. That said, with Alcantara out of options next year, the Cubs will have to make a decision on him in Spring Training. Either he makes the 26-man roster out of camp, or he hits waivers, where the Cubs almost certainly lose him to a rebuilding team. My guess is he went 2-for-4 with a couple singles, stole a base, and made two diving plays on the outfield grass:Re Nico, like most great athletes, he was ultra competitive.
