As we continue our series looking at the offseasons around the Central Division, we move to the Minnesota Wild. After a disappointingly early exit from the playoffs, general manager Bill Guerin vowed to make changes to get a Stanley Cup championship to the franchise. Based on their movement this summer, those big changes have not happened — yet.
The Wild have been linked to Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin all summer since he shockingly requested a trade out of Detroit. The problem: Minnesota doesn’t have available cap space to facilitate a trade, and lack the assets the Red Wings would likely want in a package for a player with term left on his contract. Whether or not that ever happens is still TBD.
One of the reasons the Wild lack assets is the blockbuster trade they made to acquire Quinn Hughes last year. He has just one year remaining on his contract, which is an issue. Kirill Kaprizov’s massive extension also kicks in this year, which is why the Wild don’t have the cap space to do much.

The other additions for Minnesota are primarily for depth. Minnesota was able to lock up some of their internal veterans, including former Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno, on short-term, inexpensive deals.
Subtractions
D Jake Middleton (traded to CGY) F Mats Zuccarello (signed with LAK) F Vladimir Tarasenko (still unsigned UFA)The losses up front are interesting for the Wild, who are in a salary cap crunch once again. Middleton was traded to bring back a forward to help offset the departures and a defenseman to cover his loss on the depth chart.
