The Jungle of Niles, a beloved plant store and animal sanctuary, announced on Thursday it will relocate to a nearby north suburb after temporarily closing at the start of September.
Neal Weiss, the Jungle’s owner, began a desperate search at the end of April for a new spot to operate the small business that is not so small in size — with 60,000 plants on display and for sale and serving as a home to some 200 rescue animals, including tortoises, Guinea pigs, rabbits, koi fish and birds — after the lease was not renewed.
The Jungle of Niles is set to close on Sept. 8, the business announced on social media this week. However, fans of the lush store will soon be able to visit its new location that’s just a short drive north in Lincolnshire.
Given the location change, the Jungle of Niles will also receive a name change. That said, the new name, the exact spot in Lincolnshire where the new location will open and the opening date have yet to be announced.
“We’re already hard at work on the new space to bring that same Jungle experience to life, and the animals will be making the move with us too,” the Jungle of Niles said in a post on social media. “If you’d like to visit us here one more time before we go, now’s the time. We can’t wait to welcome you to the new spot.”
“This is the closest thing to an indoor jungle most people will ever see,” Weiss told NBC Chicago in April. “I told my wife that it is not about the money I make or don’t make. It is about the smiles. That’s what this is about. That’s what makes me happy.”
Those working at the Jungle echoed Weiss’ sentiments about the unique place at the start of the search for a new place to grow.
“There’s not anywhere like this place,” said Angie Ginnane, who has worked at the Jungle for several years. “Where else you can go to feed 100 birds at once or see two giant tortoises roaming around the plant store?”
