Lanterns star Aaron Pierre teases John Stewarts journey to varied Man of Tomorrow role

Lanterns star Aaron Pierre has promised that his fledgling superhero John Stewart will have evolved into a very different character by the finale – setting the stage for his role in 2027 blockbuster Man of Tomorrow.

The new HBO Max drama adapts DC Comics' Green Lantern mythos by way of True Detective as Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and his mentee, John, attempt to make sense of a multiple homicide in a quiet Nebraska town.

Two episodes in, John has already had to endure a lot of hassle from Hal, who doesn't take kindly to the suggestion that he could be nearing the end of his service in the Green Lantern Corps.

As an ex-marine, John has been able to weather Hal's barbs with an enigmatic composure, but Pierre told Radio Times that he'll be shaped into a new man by the end of the eight-part series.

"The John that you see in episode 1 is not going to be the John that you see in episode 8," he assured. "You meet the adult John in 2016, and if he were the same in 2026, where is the journey there? Where is the evolution? Where is the growth?"

Pierre continued: "You have to have a starting point and an ending point, and it has to be filled with details that are that are accurate to what a formative experience is – and a massive part of John's is being in this dynamic with Hal.

"Learning what he loves about how Hal navigates this power, learning what he doesn't love about how Hal navigates this power."

Unsurprisingly, Pierre didn't divulge any details on the plot of Man of Tomorrow – James Gunn's Superman sequel – where John Stewart is expected to join forces with David Corenswet's wholesome Kryptonian hero.

However, he did say it was "a real gift" to have the Lanterns shoot as a 106-day introduction to his character, where he could properly "live with John and excavate [him] and comprehend him".

"I'm very grateful to have had that because it allows you to walk onto the set [of Man of Tomorrow] with a certain calmness and a certain peace," explained Pierre.

If 2025's Superman is any indication, Man of Tomorrow will be a major departure from the stripped-back grittiness of Lanterns, with expectations that it will return to Gunn's signature zany sci-fi – as perfected on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

On the change of tone and scope, Pierre added: "It's definitely a varied experience, but both of those experiences are equally as true to John and who he is and his existence.

"So I thoroughly enjoyed both, and I'm really excited for audiences to see him in both of those different contexts and how he navigates both."

The Lanterns cast is co-led by Kelly Macdonald as Rushville's diligent Sheriff Kelly Kane, with Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan and Nathan Fillion also featuring.

Lanterns is out now on HBO Max. New episodes drop on Mondays. Subscribe from £5.99 a month.

Man of Tomorrow will be released in cinemas on 9 July 2027.
