Alabama cross-country finished the regular season strong with two first-place team finishes at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa. This marks the third consecutive meet in which both the men’s and women’s teams have finished first.
The men had their second team sweep of the top five spots this season and boasted seven runners in the top nine. Dismus Lokira won the men’s 8k race, coming in at 23:05.3 and narrowly beating fellow Tide runner Rodgers Plimo Minatum by two tenths of a second. This marks Lokira’s second individual victory this season.
The Alabama men’s team has the makings for a successful run at the SEC meet, regionals and nationals. The top six runners were separated by a mere 11 seconds. Alabama’s fifth and sixth place runners finished just over two seconds apart as they fought for the crucial fifth team spot. Alabama’s seventh and eighth team finishers were a little farther behind but still were only separated by ten seconds from each other.
On the women’s side, Alabama took first through fourth place, and five runners finished in the top seven. Caren Kiplagat finished in first for the third consecutive meet in the women’s 6k with a time of 18:31.7. This year, she has not lost a race that she has started. The women’s top five runners were separated by around 63 seconds, largely because of Kiplagat’s runaway finish. The Tide’s sixth and seventh runners were about a half minute back from the fifth spot yet only nine seconds apart from each other.
“We ran some really good athletes today, and we’re always preparing for the next race and the end of the season, and this was a big step forward,” said Crimson Tide coach Dan Waters after the meet. “The SEC’s is our next big task, and then regionals and nationals, so this is a prep meet for us to get ready for the toughest conference meet we’ve ever seen, so it was a big step forward for us on both the men’s and women’s sides.”
Alabama will look to continue its momentum at the SEC Cross Country Championships in two weeks at the University of Missouri. The meet will be held on Oct. 30 at 10 a.m. CT. Both sides will try to fulfill preseason expectations as the men try to repeat and the women run to recapture the title again.
