Rupert Grint is returning to his star-making role of Ron Weasley, with the actor confirmed to join the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for a 17-week run from February 2027.
It marks the first time Grint has played the character, which he originated as a child, since the blockbuster film franchise wound down with 2011's The Deathly Hallows – Part 2.
Grint's addition means that the Broadway production won't go long without an original Harry Potter star in the cast, with Tom Felton concluding his months-long stint as Draco Malfoy on 3 January 2027.
Ticket sales for the New York City-based show notably picked up following Felton's surprise return, with Grint hoped to pull in many more nostalgic fans with his own reprisal, commencing on 2 February 2027 and ending on 30 May.

In a statement, Grint said: "Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can't wait to meet him again in this stage of life.
"There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron's shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new. And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting."
Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender said Grint's casting "creates a powerful bridge between the story audiences first fell in love with and the story of family, legacy and the passage of time that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child carries forward".
In recent years, Grint has collaborated extensively with horror filmmaker M Night Shyamalan, appearing in both his Apple TV series Servant and his 2023 film Knock at the Cabin. Other credits include Snatch, Sick Note and BBC One's The ABC Murders.
He made his Broadway debut in 2014 in Terrence McNally's It's Only a Play, alongside Nathan Lane (Only Murders in the Building).
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was first staged in London in 2016, and across its international productions it has sold more than 14 million tickets. The New York production alone has grossed north of $532 million.
Grint's further involvement in the Harry Potter franchise had previously been uncertain due to the actor's previously expressed disagreement with author JK Rowling.
Rowling has faced backlash in some quarters due to her views on transgender rights. In 2020, she published a lengthy statement detailing her stance on sex and gender debates – the essay was criticised and disputed by LGBTQ+ charities including Stonewall.
Rowling has also shared her views on social media, including in a 2024 post on X (formerly Twitter), in which she insisted that "there are no trans kids" and opposed the idea that a child can be "born in the wrong body".
In May 2025, Rowling set up the JK Rowling Women’s Fund, which describes itself as offering legal funding support to "individuals and organisations fighting to retain women's sex-based rights".
Harry Potter actors including Grint, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, have distanced themselves from Rowling's views and have issued statements supporting the transgender community. Others, including Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter and Jim Broadbent, have defended the author from the criticism she has received.
Grint said in 2020 (via BBC News): "I firmly stand with the trans community and echo the sentiments expressed by many of my peers. Trans women are women. Trans men are men. We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment."
His stage return comes in the same year as the launch of HBO's television reboot of Harry Potter, which recasts all the famous roles for what is pitched as a more detailed adaptation of the novels.
