Joe Tate’s (Ned Porteous) wedding was supposed to be his happiest day in Emmerdale. It may be his last.
The scheming millionaire has been given a taste of his own medicine by his business rivals Caleb Miligan (William Ash) and Ruby (Beth Cordingly), as part of an epic revenge against their old foe.
Their weapons of choice? Joe’s blushing bride Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley) and her ex-husband Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle). Caleb and Ruby have fanned Dawn’s suspicion that Joe was behind the mysterious attack on Billy. Billy was quick to believe it, especially given his almost-kiss with Dawn.
It’s not just Joe who is caught up in Caleb and Ruby’s plans. Jimmy King (Nick Miles) reluctantly sold his family business to the unscrupulous pair so he could afford to buy his son premium university accommodation. Resigned, Jimmy reaffirmed his love to his wife Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler) and suggested renewing their vows. Neither had any idea what was in store.
On the wedding day, Dawn was discovered trying to run away by Joe’s mentor Graham (Andrew Scarborough), forcing her to knock him out and tie him up in the stable.
Meanwhile, Caleb blew his plan to Joe when he fumed to see his nemesis so smug. Horrified to discover Caleb’s revenge, Joe rushed out to find Dawn.
Elsewhere, Graham’s words were ringing in Dawn’s head as she asked Billy how he’s sure that Joe attacked him when he was jumped from behind. When a guilt-ridden Billy admitted his life, a devastated Dawn rushed off to find Joe in the wedding marquee… only for Jimmy’s car to come crashing into the couple.
In today’s episode, an oblivious Nicola arrived to join Jimmy at the marquee and was horrified to find him injured in the wrecked car.
While Jimmy seemed fine initially, he grew progressively worse until the scene became a dream sequence in Nicola’s imagination, as he described her perfect vow renewal ceremony.
Jimmy proclaimed his love one last time, before dying in his wife’s arms.
However, Jimmy may not be the only casualty.
Trapped together in mortal danger, Joe was ultimately able to forgive Dawn’s betrayal. But with Jimmy’s car about to go up in flames, Joe ordered Dawn to save herself and their baby.
Dawn got to safety as Kim (Claire King) arrived. Having escaped the stable, Graham raced in to rescue Joe… only for the whole marquee to explode.
Is this the end of Joe Tate?
