Chicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong didn’t hold back in criticizing umpires after an apparent missed balk call during a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Crow-Armstrong was on third base in the sixth inning of the game when he made a break toward home plate. Diamondbacks pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez appeared to be delivering a pitch on the play and then stepped off the rubber, which the Cubs argued should have been a balk.
Crow-Armstrong returned to the base, but quickly began yelling at umpires, along with third base coach Quintin Berry, arguing that since Rodriguez had begun delivering a pitch and then stepped off the rubber that he had been guilty of a balk.
The umpiring crew gathered to discuss the play, and ultimately ruled the pitcher did not balk.
According to MLB rules, balk calls are not reviewable by video, and Crow-Armstrong blasted the umpires for the decision.
“I saw four umpires miss a pretty obvious play,” Crow-Armstrong said to reporters, as aired on Marquee Sports Network. “They’re out there every day, just like we are. Their one job is to get calls right. And if they get it wrong, they’re supposed to talk about it and figure it out and get it right. They didn’t.”
The pool reporter after the game asked crew chief Alfonso Márquez about the decision, and he admitted that the play was likely a balk.
“We just didn’t see it,” he said, as reported by Chicago Tribune reporter Meghan Montemurro. “After looking at the video, it looked like he stepped off.”
The lost run ultimately did prove costly, as Jordan Lawlar hit a home run in the bottom of the inning. The Cubs ultimately lost the game 2-0, running their road trip record to just 2-4.
