A new transitional shelter is opening next month to serve the homeless population on Chicago’s Far North Side.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before done municipally to create the most dignified trauma informed space like the Haven,” said Executive Director Andrew Winter of Cornerstone Community Outreach.
The Haven on Lincoln is believed to be the first non-congregate shelter of its kind in the city.
“This is the first one where each individual gets their own full hotel style room,” Winter said. “Other ones might be four to six to a room or two in a dorm space.”
The former Diplomat Motel near Lincoln and Berwyn was redeveloped into a shelter by the city.
“These motels were built up to create welcoming spaces for travelers,” he said. “So it’s great for us that we can kinda convert that into welcoming spaces for people who are kinda traveling on their own journey.”
The property features 37 private rooms and will be owned and operated by Cornerstone Community Outreach.
“This is one of three projects that Cornerstone is currently working on to create non-congregate shelters,” Winter said. “As a family shelter provider, we also have spaces that we want to and will be converting into non-congregate for families.”
The executive director said they wanted to create a space that will offer privacy, dignity and healing. Eleven of the rooms are ADA compliant. Wrap-around services will also be available on site.
“I think there needs to be more investments in creating more of these spaces citywide and there’s five programs all launching at the same time in the last two- to three-year cycle to address this need,” he said.
As they work to address homelessness, the executive director believes this is a step in the right direction to tackle a growing problem.
“Permanent housing is the goal, but in a city where affordable housing is being lost consistently, these types of services are necessary right now, and we really need to invest in them to make them sustainable,” he said.
