Ever since Alien: Covenant was released in 2017, fans have been hoping for a sequel to follow up on the major cliffhanger featuring Michael Fassbender's David.
At the end of the film, the artificially intelligent David tricked the human survivors of the colony ship Covenant into entering cryogenic stasis, having smuggled two Xenomorph embryos on board so that he could experiment on them.
Since then, things have gone quiet when it comes to this part of the franchise, with the unrelated film Alien: Romulus and the series Alien: Earth being released instead.
However, speaking with the Los Angeles Times, franchise creator Ridley Scott, who directed both of the prequel films, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, has revealed that a follow-up is now in the works.
Scott told the publication that the new film will pick up with David creating a "brave new world for himself", adding: "AIs can go off. And if they do, it’s like a bomb."
Earlier this year, Fassbender told Radio Times that he had thought the potential for more stories with David was "super fascinating".
He said: "I always thought what’s interesting was David’s relationship to women in all of the Alien films. It’s almost like there’s an attraction, but an envy of the power of a woman, you know? I always thought that was very interesting to explore with David."
However, he added: "I didn’t think what could come beyond. I think for me it's always about ‘let's just get what needs to be done now’, in terms of the journey of what that story is, you know? Complete that, and then see what happens next."
When it comes to the rest of the Alien franchise, a sequel to Alien: Romulus is currently in development, while the second season of Alien: Earth is also on the way.
Production on the new run of that season began in London in July, with Peter Dinklage, Tracey Ullman, Sam Spruell and Jerome Flynn joining the cast.
