This Saturday, August 29, you’re invited to the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill for an opening reception from 2:00-4:30, celebrating a new photography exhibition called “Looking Back: Where Memory Takes Root.” Photographer Barbara Tyroler captured beautiful pictures of local neighborhoods and residents, all with an eye to local history: each of the photos has a connection to the memory of the civil rights movement and the fight for racial integration in Chapel Hill.

The photos are just the start of the exhibition: Tyroler also partnered with the Marian Cheek Jackson Center to include oral histories from residents who lived through the civil rights era, accessible from QR codes in the gallery. And at Saturday’s reception, Tyroler’s work will be accompanied by art quilts from Ida La-Vern Couch – plus a screening of the documentary “Swimming at the Center: The Story of the A.D. Clark Pool,” all about the pool built for Black families at the Hargraves Community Center.

Aaron welcomes Barbara Tyroler to the studio, along with Carter Minor, her former classmate and the subject of one of her photos. (Minor was one of the first students who integrated Phillips Junior High School, when Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools finally formally desegregated in the mid-1960s.)
