NIPSCO nears complete power restoration as new storm threat looms

The push to restore power in northwest Indiana entered the final stretch late Tuesday, with officials hoping for 100% restoration by midnight.

As of the evening, NIPSCO said power had been restored to 99% of affected customers, but hundreds were still without electricity after two weeks in the dark.

But with another storm system approaching, new concerns emerged about the reliability of the grid.

As restoration efforts continued on Tuesday night in Gary, some neighbors sounded off.

“They just got power yesterday across the street last night, actually, and that’s when we see the lights on the houses, and we were like come on, [are]we next?” resident Shataqua Taylor said.

Tuesday marked a significant milestone in NIPSCO’s restoration efforts.

At the peak of the storm, nearly 375,000 of the utility provider’s customers were without power.

However, some residents remained in the dark, including at least one elected official.

“I want to acknowledge the citizens that are still without power,” said Gary Councilman Myles Tolliver. “I am one of those citizens that still do not have power till today. [I] just want to let you know, as the council, we will still be making those calls to NIPSCO to ensure that things are being done correctly and your power is still being restored.”

Last Wednesday, NIPSCO set a goal of restoring power to Gary by Tuesday night.

While northwest Indiana continues to recover from this historic storm, the need for help is ever-present.

The American Red Cross is still housing and feeding those affected and offering additional support, such as bringing in mobile laundry units.

“We are also providing information about resources,” said Isis Chaverri, American Red Cross regional communications director. “We are working very closely with our community partners and local officials to ensure that people have a safe place to stay and the comfort that they need.”

With the possibility of a new storm system moving in on Wednesday, the Red Cross said they’ll stick around as long as they’re needed.

“We are ready to support anyone who needs a safe place to stay, a hot meal and emotional support and assistance with other resources that we can provide through our partners,” Chaverri said.

As the lights continue to come back on and the community continues to rebuild, many hope the grid can withstand any more severe weather.
