Two weeks after a powerful derecho packing winds in excess of 100 miles per hour slammed into Indiana, NIPSCO says power has been fully restored to customers left in the dark by the storms.
As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, the company says it has restored power to 99% of its customers in northwest Indiana, with the only customers still in the dark suffering damage to privately owned equipment, according to a press release.
Some customers also are dealing with non-storm-related power outages, and the company is still working to restore that power.
Still, the company says that thousands of workers have been working around the clock to restore electricity to the area, and that Tuesday’s announcement is the culmination of those efforts.
“Being without power for days is difficult. Being without power for more than a week is extremely challenging, and we understand the burden that puts on families,” NIPSCO Coo and President Vince Parisi said in a statement. “This was the worst damage we have ever seen, and we are grateful for the patience from our customers. Thanks to thousands of people working around the clock, restoration is complete, and we’re now focused on supporting the communities still recovering.”
According to final statistics provided by NIPSCO, the derecho that rolled through the area on August 11 knocked out power to at least 375,000 residents, or roughly 80% of the company’s customers in northwest Indiana.
In the weeks that followed, more than 4,000 internal and contract workers from 14 states were tasked with restoring electricity, and they received assistance from local and state law enforcement, other first responders, and even the Indiana National Guard.
Still, the response from the company has been met with some criticism, including from Indiana Gov. Mike Braun, who has called for an investigation into the company’s handling of the situation.
“NIPSCO is a monopoly utility that Hoosiers pay every month with the expectation that it will use its considerable resources to maintain its system, prepare for severe weather and restore service as quickly as possible when disaster strikes,” Braun said in a news release. “NIPSCO has failed to keep its end of the bargain.”
While praising the workers in the field who restored power, Braun was critical of the company’s leadership.
“NIPSCO management has failed to deliver adequate solutions,” he said.
Braun is calling for a thorough review of NIPSCO’s preparation for and response to the recent power outages. On Monday, he directed the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor to file a complaint and petition the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to launch an investigation into NIPSCO.
NIPSCO said it will continue to communicate with Braun’s administration.
“NIPSCO values the regulatory process and will cooperate fully if the Commission were to open an investigation. We are committed to transparency and cooperation in providing information regarding our operations and ongoing efforts to serve our customers safely and reliably,” the company said in a statement.
