David Mitchell has confirmed that Upstart Crow, the BBC sitcom in which he played a fictionalised William Shakespeare, will not be returning for more episodes.
Speaking to The Sun, the actor and comedian said hopes of a revival have now been dropped, despite the show's strong reputation and Mitchell's recent success with other projects.
"There was a time, quite recently, when the BBC was giving serious consideration to more Upstart Crow, possibly in the form of a Christmas special," he revealed.
"But sadly nothing has come of it and now there are no plans for future episodes, which is a shame because it was a show of which I felt enormously proud and I know Ben [Elton, creator], who I think is a genius, did too."
Elton is no stranger to historical comedy, having previously been one of the minds behind the BBC's legendary sitcom Blackadder – often considered one of its best of all time.
Upstart Crow ran on BBC Two from 2016 to 2020, with Mitchell starring as a harried, ambitious Shakespeare trying to make his name in London theatre while contending with domestic life back in Stratford-upon-Avon.
The BBC's official description sets the show in 1592, using Shakespeare's real career and plays as the springboard for each episode, weaving his family troubles together with the writing of works such as Romeo and Juliet.
Much of its comedy came from literary in-jokes and Elton's satirical eye for the ego and grubby realities of the Elizabethan stage. Elton later adapted the format for the stage, underlining the affection it inspired.
Although fans will be sad to see the end of Upstart Crow, they can find plenty more from Mitchell on their screens right now.
He currently stars in the second season of BBC One's Ludwig, where he plays reclusive puzzle-setter turned reluctant detective John 'Ludwig' Taylor, alongside Anna Maxwell Martin, Mark Bonnar and Sian Clifford.
In addition, earlier this year, he joined a slew of other British comedy talents for the second season of Last One Laughing UK on Prime Video.
