Lanterns star Kelly Macdonald has opened up about her character's surprise connection to the Batman franchise via one of DC Comics's most iconic locations: Gotham City.
The new HBO series adapts the publisher's Green Lantern lore into a gritty, grounded detective drama, set in a small Nebraska town bristling with extraterrestrial paranoia.
Macdonald plays Sheriff Kerry Kane, who liaises with investigators Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), whose presence in the town only stirs up more anxiety.
Probing her own mysterious past, Hal tells Sheriff Kane that her accent and general demeanour doesn't "scream Rushville" – an observation she swiftly bats away, calling Hal a "snob".
Still, he is proven right on the subject of her origins, as she confirms her Gotham roots, telling Hal that she "moved here on a whim". It's a purposefully vague statement that begs elaboration, but Kane refuses to say anything more.
Macdonald spoke to Radio Times about her Lanterns character's notable hometown, recalling it was "quite thrilling" to learn that Kane would be tied to the setting of so many iconic DC Comics stories.
View Green Video on the source website"I wasn't a comic book girl [growing up], so I wasn't au fait with all of that, but Gotham is an iconic place," she began.
"I had discussions before we started shooting with James Hawes, the first block director, when we were talking about the fact that she was from Gotham and accent-wise where to place her."
Macdonald revealed that it was difficult not to be influenced by The Penguin, an acclaimed Gotham-set drama that also aired on HBO, where she noted that all the characters have "very strong" regional accents.
Of course, at the time of writing, The Penguin and Matt Reeves's The Batman is classed as a separate universe to Lanterns and James Gunn's Superman. But there's another reason why Hawes advised taking Sheriff Kane's voice in a different direction.
"He said he wanted Kerry to be a bit more enigmatic," said Macdonald. "We imagine Gotham as an east coast, North American metropolis, but she's been in Nebraska for a while, [so] just a little bit more enigmatic.
"But it was very difficult when I was watching [The Penguin] not to just want to emulate the voices I was hearing on that. I caught myself a few times before I went on set when I was just practicing."
The reveal that Sheriff Kane hails from Gotham is particularly intriguing because of the significance of that family name to the fictional city.
Martha Kane was, after all, the maiden name of Bruce Wayne's ill-fated mother. Her niece, Kate Kane, would go on to follow her cousin into vigilantism under the moniker of Batwoman.
At present, there's no evidence to suggest that Kerry comes from that same Kane family, but it does open the door to a connection should Batman be introduced to James Gunn's growing DC Universe.
Quizzed on whether she'd like to see Sheriff Kane visit Gotham, whether in flashback or as a homecoming, Macdonald added: "It would be great. I mean, if they could make me look younger as well…
"It's just one of those little boxes I didn't know I wanted ticked. To get to do something like this is incredible."
