India’s WTC 2027 Final qualification scenario after AUS-BAN series

Australia strengthened their position at the top of the World Test Championship 2025-27 table after beating Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs in the second Test at Mackay. The result levelled the two-Test series 1-1 and gave Australia 96 points from 10 matches, with an 80.00 PCT.

The result also had an impact on India's qualification prospects. India are currently fifth with 64 points from 10 Tests and a 53.33 PCT, but they have eight matches remaining in the WTC cycle, including the ongoing second Test against Sri Lanka.

Australia's Mackay victory was an important response after Bangladesh won the opening Test in Darwin by nine wickets. Mitchell Starc led the bowling effort with a 10-wicket match haul, including figures of 6/12 in Bangladesh's first innings, while Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon took three wickets apiece in the second innings.

The result leaves Australia at the top of the WTC table with eight wins and two defeats from 10 Tests. Their 80.00 PCT is currently the best among all nine teams. Australia still have 12 Tests remaining in the cycle, with four against New Zealand, three in South Africa and five against India.

Australia's chances of qualifying for the 2027 WTC Final are very high. They need just six wins from their remaining 12 Tests to reach the likely qualification cut-off.

India remain fifth in the table with 64 points and a 53.33 PCT. Their position did not change despite winning the first Test against Sri Lanka by 165 runs in Galle. Bangladesh's strong PCT after their Darwin victory had kept them above India in the standings.

India now have eight Tests left in the cycle: one more against Sri Lanka, two against New Zealand and five against Australia. The ongoing Colombo Test is therefore particularly important, with India looking to build on their Galle victory. The second Test is being played at the Sinhalese Sports Club from August 23 to 27.

India have very less chance of reaching the final at this stage. They need seven wins from their remaining eight Tests to reach the likely qualification cut-off.

That leaves very little room for India to drop points. Their home five-Test series against Australia could ultimately decide whether they remain in contention, while the two-Test New Zealand series will also be significant.

New Zealand are third with 52 points and a 72.22 PCT after six Tests. They have a great chance, with six wins from their remaining 10 Tests.

Bangladesh remain fourth despite the Mackay defeat, with 40 points and a 55.56 PCT from six Tests. Their qualification chance has fallen and they need five wins from their final six Tests.

Sri Lanka are sixth with 20 points and a 33.33 PCT. Their qualification chance are really low, with six wins required from seven remaining Tests.

England are seventh at 29.76 PCT, while Pakistan are ninth at 19.05%. Their projected qualification chances are only extremely low. West Indies, meanwhile, have already been eliminated from contention.
