Emilio Navaira was one of the most influential artists to bring Tejano music to a wider audience.
The singer-songwriter, who became known as the “Garth Brooks of Tejano,” would have turned 64 on Aug. 23.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1962, Navaira began his career performing Tejano music before expanding into country, building a following on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border.
His powerful voice and energetic performances helped make him one of the biggest stars in Tejano music during the 1990s.
Navaira’s nickname reflected both his popularity and his crossover ambitions.
He scored six entries on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, including “It’s Not the End of the World,” “Life Is Good” and “Be With You.”
At the same time, he remained a major force in Tejano music, earning multiple awards and building a career that helped introduce the genre to listeners who may not have encountered it otherwise.
Navaira’s music often blended traditional Tejano sounds with country influences, reflecting his Texas roots and broad musical interests.
His career reached another major milestone in 1995, when he became the first Tejano artist to perform at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s main stage.
His 1995 English-language album, Life Is Good, helped introduce him to a broader American audience. The title track became one of his best-known country recordings, while his 1997 album It’s on the House continued his crossover efforts.
His success came during a period when Tejano music was enjoying increased mainstream attention, with artists such as Selena helping bring the Texas-based genre to an international audience.
Navaira’s career ultimately encompassed both sides of the musical world, making him a particularly distinctive figure in Texas music.
Navaira’s career was cut short when he died on May 16, 2016, at age 53, after suffering a heart attack.
But his influence on Tejano music has endured.
