Editor’s note: The video in the player above is from a previous report.

The boater accused of being under the influence during a deadly crash on the Fox River in July has been charged with first-degree murder.

A grand jury in McHenry County indicted Richard Stevenson, of Lisle, in connection with the crash that killed Marine veteran Magdalena Jablonska and injured her fiancé.

Prosecutors said Stevenson was traveling around 80 miles per hour when his boat crashed into theirs.

The indictment also alleges Stevenson had cocaine and THC in his system at the time.

According to McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi Freese, Stevenson’s 31-foot pontoon rode over Jablonska’s 20-foot Crownline before coming to a stop on land.

Along with first-degree murder, Stevenson was charged with four counts of aggravated driving under the influence and four counts of operating a watercraft under the influence.

“These new charges follow an extensive and continuing investigation by the State Conservation Police with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources,” the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office said in a Facebook post, in part. “Based upon a comprehensive review of the totality of the evidence, the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office determined that the presentation of the First Degree Murder charge to the grand jury was required.”

On Friday, Stevenson pleaded not guilty to all charges.

During a detention hearing in late July, prosecutors said Stevenson had been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol on three prior occasions. He had also been charged with reckless driving on three prior occasions and four misdemeanor speeding offenses.

“This man was a ticking time-bomb and that bomb went off this past Saturday on the Fox River,” Deputy Chief Brian Miller said at the hearing.

Jablonska’s family said earlier this month they planned to file a wrongful death lawsuit, with lawyers calling the incident that left 48-year-old Magdalena Jablonska dead a “horrific, tragic, avoidable accident.”
