Since Michael Owen won the Ballon d'Or in 2001, no other Englishman has achieved the same accolade – but according to the former Three Lions striker himself, that could all change.
During an exclusive interview with Radio Times, while promoting upcoming Prime Video series Meet the Owens, Owen said that Harry Kane has "a huge chance" of winning the prestigious award this year, a claim that both bookies and plenty of fans would agree with.
"Harry Kane has got a huge chance. In fact, he's favourite to win it this year, which would be amazing," Owen said. "He's obviously had a phenomenal season with Bayern Munich, a great World Cup as well. Of course, if England had got to the final and won it, then there would be no question he would be the winner."
Owen noted that Kane, despite being a favourite to win, has "stiff competition" from players around the world.
He added: "This is possibly the best chance an English person has got of winning the Ballon d'Or since I won it 25 years ago. So yeah, absolutely. There's a a chance that we could have another Englishman."
It's no surprise that Kane is a favourite for many, having won the Bundesliga Golden Boot for the third time, creating a record in the process as the first player to win the award in each of his first three seasons in Germany.
The possibility of being awarded the Ballon d'Or has been put to Kane in recent days, with the striker saying it "would be amazing" if he were to win.
"I'm extremely proud to have put in the season I did last year," Kane said during a press conference. "The Ballon d'Or is as good as it gets from an individual point of view and I know I had a great season last season, but as always the focus is on this new season and the Ballon d'Or is not in my hands.
"I've done what I can do in terms of putting in the performances. It's now down to votes and other people and the media, stuff I can't control. We'll see what happens."
Eyes are on plenty of other players worldwide, notably 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, fellow Bayern Munich player Michael Olise and even current holder Ousmane Dembele are among the favourites to win the award this year.
The winner is set to be crowned in London in October and this year will mark the 70th anniversary of the event, as well as the first time the ceremony will be held outside of Paris.
