Theo James has for a long time been one of the many names linked with the still vacant James Bond role – but the star has now definitively ruled himself out of the race.
James – known for his roles in Sanditon, The White Lotus and The Gentlemen – made the remarks in a recent interview with British GQ, and there was a particular reason he gave as for why he wouldn't be the right fit.
"I’m definitely too old now, for one," he told the publication.
James also explained that he was wary about taking on roles that would increase his fame to unmanageable levels, explaining: the Bond role "would be an example of a place you could never come back from".
"Imagine, suddenly, you and I cannot walk down the street," he continued. "What that does to your children, who are trying to find themselves in the midst of hyper-scrutiny and fame.
“None of that, to me, is worth it. At the time, it’s very intoxicating, being offered some huge, sexy part that would change your life forever. But it really wouldn’t ultimately be worth it.”
There continues to be much speculation as to which actor will ultimately take over the iconic role that was vacated by Daniel Craig following his fifth 007 outing in No Time to Die almost five years ago.
The latest frontrunner is Slow Horses favourite Jack Lowden, with Richard Osman revealing last week that he'd heard the Scot was "definitely being strongly considered".
In recent months, Callum Turner and Jacob Elordi had emerged as the two leading candidates for the role, although those involved in casting have repeatedly made clear that the process is still ongoing.
Earlier in August, producer Amy Pascal predicted that the new actor would finally be announced by the end of the year, telling Deadline that that time frame was "a good bet".
She added the creative team has been "methodical" in trying to find someone "really different" from previous Bond star Craig.
