Drew Barrymore sold her Westchester house for $4.5 million, just above the $4.4 million she paid in 2024; the 18th-century colonial took two years to renovate

Actress and talk show host Drew Barrymore has sold her historic Westchester, New York, home for $4.5 million, just above the $4.4 million she paid for the property in 2024.

Barrymore bought the 18th-century Colonial home as a private escape from New York City. She later spent about two years working on the property, turning a house that needed major repairs into a renovated family retreat.

The sale comes only a short time after the renovation was completed. Barrymore had originally listed the estate for nearly $5 million, with the property marketed at $4.99 million. The final sale price was $4.5 million.

The Harrison property sits on nearly 12 acres and includes a main house, a guesthouse and outdoor spaces designed for relaxing and entertaining. The estate covers more than 7,200 square feet and has six bedrooms and nine bathrooms.

Barrymore purchased the property in 2024 for $4.4 million after looking for a place where she could spend more time outdoors.

According to Realtor, the house was built in the 1740s, making it nearly three centuries old. What Barrymore first expected to be a cosmetic update became a much bigger project.

According to the details she shared in interviews, the renovation eventually became a “complete internal gut.” Major systems, including the heating, plumbing and air conditioning, had to be replaced.

The kitchen was also one of the biggest parts of the project. Barrymore wanted to open up the space and bring in more natural light. She said the work “took a year of engineering to figure out.”

Barrymore also took an active role in the home’s design. She selected many of the furniture pieces, finishes and paint colors herself. She used the project as a chance to explore her long-standing interest in interior design.

The actress even lived at the property while it was still being worked on.

“I lived in the house in the most primitive of scenarios,” she revealed. “It’s some of my favorite times and memories.”

The renovation was not simply about making the old house look better. The work also helped bring its older character together with modern comforts.

The finished property includes bright open rooms, several fireplaces, a large great room with a 30-foot ceiling, a sunlit conservatory and an updated kitchen. The primary suite has a sitting room, balcony, large walk-in closet and two bathrooms.

Outside, the estate features a gunite swimming pool, wildflower gardens, wooded areas and large green spaces. A detached guesthouse includes a loft, living room, full bathroom and kitchen.

Barrymore originally chose the Westchester property because she wanted a countryside retreat that was easier to reach than her former Hamptons home.

The Harrison location offered a shorter trip from New York City. It could be reached in less than an hour by car, while the trip to her former property in Sagaponack could take close to three hours.

Her goal was to have a place where she and her family could get away from the city and spend time in nature.

“I had desperately wanted a place outside the city because I had been working for years at a studio with no windows,” she explained to Rue Magazine. “I’m from California, and I just had this urge to find nature.”

Barrymore also described feeling an immediate connection to the property when she first visited it.

“I came here and I walked around and I was like, I swear my family has been in this house,” she said. “I don’t think I’m super woo-woo, but I had this really strong sense and feeling.”

However, the long renovation changed the situation. Because the work took much longer than Barrymore expected, her family’s needs also changed during that time.

That made the countryside retreat less necessary than it had been when she first purchased the home.

The sale also follows a busy period for Barrymore professionally. She remains known for films including E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates and Charlie’s Angels. She is also the host of The Drew Barrymore Show, which premiered in 2020.

Barrymore has not said whether she plans to take on another renovation project. For now, the sale marks the end of her two-year journey with the historic Westchester estate.
