Those downed lines are also causing significant traffic issues, with motorists asked to avoid the area as crews assess the damage.
According to NIPSCO officials, crews received reports of a fire on an electrical pole near the intersection of U.S. Highway 41 and Main Street on Thursday afternoon.
The fire left approximately 9,000 customers without electricity according to the utility, and crews are responding to the scene, along with firefighters and city officials.
Town Hall also lost electricity because of the incident, leaving many services unavailable.
The outages also led to traffic lights to go dark along U.S. 30 and U.S. 41 according to Schererville officials. Police in the area are also warning of significant traffic congestion near U.S. 41 and Main Street.

St. John’s officials are also reporting power outages in their community related to the incident.
