By Terin Frodyma on SwimSwam

Kenneth Treadway, who was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) in 1983 as a contributor to the sport, died on July 31 in his home in Lawrence, Kansas, at the age of 96.

Treadway, born in Oklahoma in 1930, founded the Phillips 66 Splash Club in 1950 and later helped establish swimming programs at Bartlesville Public Schools and the Bartlesville YMCA that promoted water safety and competitive swimming.

He later helped establish the Phillips 66 Long Beach Aquatic Club alongside Don Gambril. During his time at Phillips Petroleum, he convinced the company to sponsor an annual swim meet, which led to Phillips hosting four national championships beginning in 1963. In 1972, after partnering with Dr. John Bogert, the two helped develop a national corporate partnership for swimming, which became the Phillips 66 sponsorship with USA Swimming, and remains the longest continuous corporate sponsorship of an amateur sport in America.

In addition to his contributions to the sport, he also was on three different US Olympic team staffs, serving on the men’s team staff in both 1965 (Tokyo) and 1972 (Munich), as well as the women’s team staff in 1968 (Mexico City).

Treadway and Dr. Hal Henning represented the United States at the FINA (now World Aquatics) meeting in December of 1968, which the International Swimming Hall of Fame was approved by the international body of aquatics.

In 1972, treadway was awarded the AAU Neptune Award, which at the time was among the highest awards for service in the sport. He was later inducted into the International Hall of fame as a member of the 1983 class as a contributor. In 2008, he was then awarded the President’s award by the ISHOF in 2008, and was inducted into the Bartlesville Sports Commission Hall of Fame in 2009.
