Bears Bits: Williams Steals the Show, 18-84 Connection Cooking, Jaylon Praise, More

The Chicago Bears were in Cincinnati on Thursday for a joint practice with the Bengals before their preseason contest on Saturday. Caleb Williams got his first taste of an opposing defense since Chicago’s Divisional Round loss to the Rams in January, and he did not disappoint.

Williams threw a trio of touchdown passes in an early red zone drill, with the first a connection to Colston Loveland that should bring a small tear to the eyes of Bears fans. In the words of Jeremy Rauch (a reporter for Cincy’s local FOX affiliate FOX19): “Williams threw a laser that whizzed over Jordan Battle’s head to Colston Loveland in the end zone. An impossible completion, and he made it.” Williams was asked about the throw after practice: “I saw them rotate down into one-high,” Williams told reporters. “And then just knowing it’s Colston, that’s my guy, going up the seam, and the defender’s back was turned to me. He turned around just at the end, but the ball was already going over the top. Colston ran a great route and made a great catch.” There’s so much goodness there. Williams making the throw. The awe of it from an opposing reporter. Williams’ ability to see the coverage rotate. His trust in Loveland to run the route precisely and uncork the throw with Loveland’s back turned to him. Loveland running the route to perfection and turning around to find it and secure the catch. All of it. The 18-84 connection is going to be special this season. He threw three red zone touchdowns today against the Bengals, and three on Wednesday against his own. That’s looking pretty good. According to his head coach, so is the accuracy. “I just told him this morning, I thought the last two days, even though it was an abbreviated practice yesterday, they were really good. Red zone was a big emphasis for us last year; we got a few good reps of that yesterday. I think he’s shown significant strides there,” Johnson said before Thursday’s practice. Johnson continued: “You see it early on, in our warm-up periods, to routes on air, and it’s translating over to the team periods as well, and yet he still hasn’t lost that stinger of being aggressive and trying to push the limits a little bit. I think that’s healthy, particularly in practice, just seeing how tight of windows we can fit these things into. There’s a good delicate balance… He’s making significant strides each and every day.” Williams also threw a touchdown to wide receiver Kaden Davis, which Bears.com’s Larry Mayer called “a diving touchdown catch just inside the right front pylon in the end zone.” I wrote earlier today about Davis having a real shot at making the 53-man roster, citing his run blocking and attention to detail as the reasons Ben Johnson values him. When asked what has made Davis so successful in camp, Williams had this to say (via the team’s official website): “Him being able to come in and learn the plays pretty fast; where to line up, how to line up, how to run the routes, things like that. And then just being in the right position. He’s made plays for us so far, whether it’s in practice or in the game. He’s been explosive. He’s been fun to watch. I’m excited for him to keep growing and keep working.” There’s been much discussion about the injuries that have plagued Chicago’s secondary throughout camp, but not much mention of Jaylon Johnson, who is back to full health and turning heads inside the building and out. Today, Johnson was tasked with working against two of the best receivers in the game, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Chase was asked about Johnson after today’s joint session and called him a “real good corner,” via the Sun-Times’ Patrick Finley.

Chase said Johnson was “pretty aggressive” on a couple of plays today, which bodes well for what his head coach said he was looking for out of the secondary before today’s practice: “On the back end, you want to see stickiness in coverage. “We want to be able to stay attached and try to make plays on the football. Our calling card a year ago was the takeaways. It would be great to get a couple takeaways.” With plenty of question marks behind Johnson and the regular season approaching quickly, seeing Johnson return to form is a good development for the Bears.
