It wasn’t a great day, to say the least, in the Cubs minor league system. Knoxville had their game washed out for the second consecutive day, Iowa lost a close one, and South Bend and Myrtle Beach were both blown out. One of the bright spots of the day was a great day from Owen Ayers at the plate and in the field, though, so there’s that. Let’s get to it.
Cubs Prospects Report | August 20, 2026
Triple-A Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs lost by far the closest game of the day, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers). This one had some excitement at the beginning and the end, with not a whole lot of action in innings two through eight. Both teams got on the board in the first inning. For the Cubs, it was Owen Ayers stepping up and getting the job done. With no outs and runners on the corners, Ayers singled in the game’s first run, giving Iowa a 1-0 lead. However, that’s all they’d end up scoring despite threatening with no outs, and it turned out to cost them.
In the bottom of the first, the Mud Hens got the run back with a one-out RBI single off Kohl Franklin. Other than that, though, Franklin was really good. He went five innings and allowed just that one run on five hits. Franklin struck out four and walked just one. Unfortunately, despite Franklin’s great outing and Hoby Milner, Jaxon Wiggins, and Antoine Kelly holding Toledo to just one hit out of the bullpen, the game would go to the ninth tied 1-1.
In the ninth, the Cubs were held off the board in the top half. In the bottom half, Toledo got to Ethan Roberts. With runners on the corners and two outs, the Mud Hens walked it off on an RBI single, taking the game 2-1.
Despite the loss, Owen Ayers was phenomenal. Ayers went 3-for-4 and also threw out two runners on the basepaths.

The last two games of the day didn’t go very well. The South Bend Cubs got smoked by the West Michigan Whitecaps (Tigers) 9-0. Offensively, there wasn’t much going on at all for South Bend. They combined for just three hits on the day, with two coming from Kade Snell and one coming from Brennan Hudson.
The pitching wasn’t much better than the offense. Braylon Myers got the start, and he got shelled. Myers allowed six hits and five runs (all earned) over four innings of work. The first two runs came in the second, then four more came in the third. After that, the game was pretty much decided. Luke Alwood allowed two more in the fifth out of the bullpen, and Edwardo Melendez allowed the ninth and final Whitecaps run in the seventh.
Notable Performances
Kade Snell | 2-4, 3B Brennan Hudson | 1-2, BB Edwardo Melendez | 3.0 IP, H, ER, 5 K, 2 BBFINAL: Whitecaps 9, Cubs 0 | Box Score
Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Things went from bad for South Bend to worse for Myrtle Beach. The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Astros) dominated the Pelicans from start to finish en route to a 19-1 win. The Pelicans threw five pitchers out there on Wednesday, and four of the five allowed multiple earned runs. Only Jhon Cabral wasn’t charged with an earned run, but he was on the mound for three unearned runs.
As for the lineup, it wasn’t much better. The Pelicans’ starting nine combined for six hits. Caden Sorrell and Derniche Valdez each had two, and Jhoander Irigoyen and Alexis Hernandez each had one. Myrtle Beach’s lone run of the ballgame came while trailing 19-0 in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and a runner on first, Caden Sorrell ripped a triple to avoid the shutout. But that was the only highlight of the night for the Pelicans.
Notable Performances
Caden Sorrell | 2-5, RBI, 3B Derniche Valdez | 2-4, 2B Alexis Hernandez | 1-3, BBFINAL: Woodpeckers 19, Pelicans 1 | Box Score
