The Chicago Cubs have boosted their infield depth in the wake of the Dansby Swanson injury, adding former Guardians and Mets utility man Gabriel Arias off of waivers. They shifted Phil Maton to the 60-day Injured List to open up a 40-man spot for Arias. They’ll need to move someone off of the 26-man roster tomorrow, assuming they want to activate Arias to be available right away for the bench.
There was a time when adding Gabriel Arias would’ve been an eye-opening, significant move. It was only a few years ago that Arias, now 26, was a top-ten prospect in the Guardians system, and a possible long-term starting shortstop for them. Unfortunately, in more than 1000 big league plate appearances, he was not able to translate his upper-minors success at the plate against MLB pitching. In his career in the bigs, he’s hit just .218/.274/.358/76 wRC+ with a 34.1% K rate, and those numbers have been pretty consistent across his time. That might just be who he is.
That said, Arias is still relatively young, and you never entirely rule out something clicking in a new organization (though it didn’t happen for him in his brief time with the Mets). He’s an average or better defender at every infield spot, and has also played a little in the outfield. With the Cubs, he’s mostly a defensive boost to what the Cubs’ options would’ve been at shortstop behind Nico Hoerner. I wouldn’t expect him see much time otherwise.
A fun aside to the transaction: Arias originally was DFA’d by the Mets so they could bring up … Christopher Morel.
As for Maton, his move to the 60-day IL means he would not be eligible to return until September 19 at the earliest. At that point, there’s just a week left in the regular season, and it’s very hard to imagine him showing enough at that time to make a playoff roster. It might mean his season is over.
