For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Ohio high school state champion Lexi Hartzell has announced her commitment to swim and study at Oakland University beginning in the fall of 2027, becoming the first verbal in the Golden Grizzlies’ class of 2031. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am so grateful to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Oakland University for Division I swimming! I would first like to thank my family, friends, teammates, and coaches who have helped shape me into the person and athlete I am today. I would also like to thank Coach Mitch, Coach Molly, and everyone at OU for this incredible opportunity and letting me be apart of such an amazing program. GO GRIZZLIES!
A senior at Upper Arlington High School in Columbus, Ohio, Hartzell has been a member of her school’s varsity swimming team since her freshman year. She also trains year-round with Upper Arlington Swim Club, where she primarily specializes in breaststroke and IM.
Hartzell is coming off a breakthrough 2025-26 season in which she dropped more than six seconds in the 200 breast, almost two seconds in the 100 breast, and more than a second in the 200 IM. At the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division I State Championships in February, she helped Upper Arlington to gold in the 200 medley relay (29.25 breast split), placed 13th in the 100 breast (1:04.98, PB), and finished 22nd in the 200 IM (2:12.19). Her current lifetime best in the 200 IM, 2:10.14, came a few weeks earlier at the district meet. She then set her 200 breast PB of 2:26.14 at the Ohio Tim Myers SC Senior Champs about a week after the high school season ended.

Hartzell’s current lifetime bests in the breaststroke events would have qualified for the ‘B’ finals, and she is just over a second outside scoring range in the 200 IM, positioning her to contribute right away for the Golden Grizzlies, with two full seasons of training still ahead before she lines up at her first conference meet.
