STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. — News10NBC is continuing to track measles cases in Western New York, amid what health officials call the U.S.’s worst measles outbreak in 35 years.
There are at least two confirmed cases in Erie County, two in Allegany County, one in Seneca County, and now one in Steuben County. Kat Potter, the deputy health director in Steuben County, said the case is in an unvaccinated person, but did not say if the person was traveling.

John Hopkins University shows that Steuben County has a 99.8% MMR vaccination rate. News10NBC’s Kristi Blake wanted to know how severe the cases are for those with and without their vaccination.
“Measles in an unvaccinated person who’s been vaccinated with MMR, they have close to a 95 to 100% rate of never contracting the illness, when they’re exposed,” Potter said. “So that’s a great benefit and talks about how effective the vaccine is. If a vaccinated person were to contract measles, the symptoms would look much milder. You’d have a shorter illness and would lead to less severe complications in an unvaccinated person. As you can imagine, the symptoms potentially could be more severe and lead to complications such as pneumonia, brain swelling, dehydration, and potential hearing and vision loss.”
Working to contain the disease
After confirming measles, the public health department works quickly to contact anyone who had contact with the affected person during a specific time period. Similar to COVID-19 protocols, patients provide a list of who they’ve seen, where they’ve gone, and when, and the experts do the work from there.
Centers for Disease Control data show there are already more measles cases this year nationally than in all of 2025. There are about 2,600 cases in the country. The Steuben and Seneca County cases are not yet reflected in the latest CDC map from last week.
The CDC map shows a lot of cases in South Carolina, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, which borders New York. Blue dots on the map mean the infection was contracted locally. Red dots indicate someone who traveled.
News10NBC asked Potter if health officials are worried about the continued spread. Potter said that’s a hard question. The health department would like to say no, but there’s always a possibility. For those traveling to a spot with known cases, Potter offered advice.
“So that’s actually one of the things that you would look into before traveling somewhere. Look into making sure that you are up to date on your vaccines,” Potter said. “And if you choose not to be vaccinated or if you’re unsure of your status, you would be doing regular disease control and prevention. So you be trying to avoid crowds, making sure you’re washing your hands, taking care of yourself. You could potentially consider masking. And then you’d also want to monitor yourself for 21 days after you travel to an area where there was measles.”
Symptoms of measles
Measles is spread primarily through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, releasing tiny droplets containing the virus. If you think you may have measles or you’ve been exposed, call your doctor. Do not go to a walk-in clinic or the emergency department.
If you’re vaccinated, Potter said you have at least a 95% chance of never contracting measles. If you do, the symptoms will be mild. Think shortness of breath and rash versus brain swelling and potential vision and hearing loss.
