Catcher Logan Driscoll has triggered an assignment clause in his minor league deal with the Rays and is headed to the Marlins, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Though the trade deadline has passed, trades can still happen if a player’s contract hasn’t been selected to a 40-man roster at any point during the season. MLBTR took a look at post-deadline transactions earlier this month. Tampa is getting cash in return, per Kevin Barral of Fish on First.
The way an assignment clause usually works is that all 29 other clubs, apart from the signing team, must be notified when a player triggers one. If any of them are willing to give him a roster spot, the signing club must give the player a spot themselves or trade him to a club that will. Topkin says Driscoll triggered an assignment clause but Barral says this is just a minor league trade. Time will tell whether Driscoll will get a spot on Miami’s 40-man roster or if he will just be non-roster depth.
