‘Absolute chaos: Witness recounts Wrigley bleacher brawl during Crosstown Classic

A bleacher brawl that broke out between Cubs and White Sox fans during Monday’s Crosstown Classic game at Wrigley Field is the talk across town as viral videos of the fight circulate.

“I decided to take out my phone, anyone who watched reality TV knows as soon as that drink is thrown, all hell breaks loose,” said John Bonnell, captured and posted a video of the fight in so-called Friendly Confines that has since gone viral.

Fans of both Chicago teams can be seen throwing punches in the video.

“Everything just blew up, the whole section. All these additional people swarmed in and it was just absolute chaos,” he said.

Bonnell said he thinks the fight started from personal insults and trash talk that went too far.

“You hate to see it. I understand a little bit of trash talk to elevate the energy, and of course the rivalry there. But make sure it stays in the bounds of not anyone making personal attacks,” he said. “You should just be able to come to the park and have a good time, we don’t fight over who wins, it’s frustrating sometimes but never worth the fight.”

The fight captured on video wasn’t the only one to take place during the game.

Chicago police reported another fan was arrested for a sucker-punch near the bathroom.

A spokesperson for the Cubs said “the safety of our fans is always a top priority. We work closely with our public safety partners to respond to incidents at the ballpark and appreciate their partnership in addressing the situation last night.” According to Cubs’ Code of Conduct at Wrigley Field, “fighting, taunting or making threatening gestures or remarks” are prohibited.

Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong, who made history with his performance in the game, called the fights in the stands “unfortunate and somewhat nauseating” in his post-game remarks.

“You got people in the stands competing, too, and, I just think aside from that, like, all jokes aside too, it’s really good for the city having both of us playing the kind of baseball we are and putting games out there like we did tonight,” he said.
