A locally-acquired salmonella outbreak that has been traced back to a Ramona farm continues to expand.
There are now 21 reported cases, including seven hospitalizations, since late July.
The outbreak was originally tracked back to mayonnaise produced by Ramona Family Naturals. Further investigation has linked it to the use of raw eggs in the mayonnaise, specifically from a local poultry farm called Happy Hens.
This is not related to a salmonella outbreak in the Midwest that has made at least 98 people ill, the county said in a statement.
“The County is working closely with the California Department of Food and Agriculture and the California Department of Public Health on the outbreak,” the statement added.
“The County’s Department of Environmental Health and Quality has reached out to retail food facilities that may have received eggs from Happy Hens with reminders about proper egg storage, grading requirements and resales.”
The county is encouraging people to exercise caution when cooking and eating eggs:
Cook eggs thoroughly until yolks and whites are firm. Discard suspicious eggs. Do not eat eggs that are already cracked. Throw away eggs that appear to have dirty shells. Practice safe handling. Always wash hands, utensils, prep surfaces, and containers with hot, soapy water after handling raw eggs.Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, fever, severe vomiting, dehydration, and stomach cramps. Most people who get sick recover within a few days. However, salmonella can be severe in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, who may require hospital care. Anyone who experiences a fever or gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea or abdominal cramps after eating undercooked eggs should seek medical advice. They are also encouraged to report the illness to the County Department of Environmental Health and Quality at (858) 505‑6814 or online.
