Perhaps the greatest debut all-time of a position player shattered the Cubs’ chances of a win today.
Cardinals outfielder Joshua Baez homered on the first pitch of his first Major League at-bat … then proceeded to go deep again in the 4th inning, and once more in the 6th inning, all off of starter Matthew Boyd.
Boyd battled command issues throughout his start, but was nonetheless sent back out for the 6th inning, which was certainly a head-scratcher with a (mostly) rested bullpen and Baez due up again while trying to hold the deficit to one run. Well, Baez then hit that third homer off Boyd. Two batters later, Blaze Jordan hit a solo homer, and that was that for his afternoon.
Today marked the third start this season (of 16 total games) that Boyd has allowed five earned runs or more. The seven earned he gave up today raised his ERA from 3.50 to 4.02.
Michael Conforto is the Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game for tying it back up after Baez’s first blast with a three-run home run to right in the second inning. If MLB had an All-Bench team, Conforto would be one of the best candidates. In just 184 at-bats, he now has 10 home runs.
Honorable mention to Pedro Ramirez, who was 2-for-4 with a double. The kid just keeps hitting.
Meanwhile, Pete Crow-Armstrong might be human after all? After today’s 0-for-4, PCA is 3 for his last 31. Make of that what you will, but he nearly hit an opposite-field homer in his first at-bat today, so I’m not panicking one single percent.
Flush it and on to tomorrow, when Edward Cabrera makes his long-awaited return to the rotation and the series is still winnable.
