There is now only a matter of months until we get a brand-new big screen Star Wars adventure in the form of Star Wars: Starfighter, and thanks to D23 we have just got some news regarding the films plot and central character.
The first footage of the film, which will be released in May 2027, was shown at the event, but not shared publicly. However, what we did get a glimpse of was director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Gosling taking to the stage to share some details.
On stage, it was confirmed that Gosling is playing a character called Kade Auberon, who was described as a guy "from the wrong side of the galaxy whose fate is intertwined with the fastest starfighter ever built".
Levy also said that the film "takes place in a period of time that had never been shown in a Star Wars adventure", adding credence to previous reports saying that the film will be set five years after The Rise Of Skywalker, the furthest we have so far gone in the timeline.
View oEmbed on the source websiteThe footage which was shown saw young actor Flynn Grey finding Auberon’s secret speeder, kicking off the adventure.
Alongside Gosling and Grey, Starfighter will also star Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings and Amy Adams.
Smith, who was previously cast in The Rise of Skywalker but whose role was cut, is reportedly playing the villain of the film, and has previously worked with Gosling on the latter's directorial debut, Lost River.
Starfighter will be the 13th live action film in the Star Wars franchise, after the nine films in the Skywalker Saga, plus Rogue One, Solo and this year's release, The Mandalorian and Grogu.
D23 also saw news about the franchise's future on the small screen, with a first look trailer being unveiled for the second season of Disney+ series, Ahsoka. That new batch of the episodes will be arriving in January 2027, more than three years after the first run.
Star Wars: Starfighter will arrive in cinemas on 28 May 2027.
