GIRARD — Local trainer and promoter Jack Loew, in conjunction with his South Side Boxing Club, will present a 15-bout, all-amateur fight card on Aug. 22 at the Metroplex Expo Center in Girard.
His “Summer Slam, Battle for the Belt” show will feature two heavyweight Masters Division bouts with local favorite Chris Vass of South Side B.C. in the co-main, and Antwon Peeples will make his ring return after a two-year absence.
“We have plenty of excitement in store for the night, with all bouts a meaningful battle,” Loew said. “Every fighter has something on the line as they look to advance their careers.”
The two heavyweight Masters Division bouts will pit Tony Scandy of Youngstown up against Jamie Rudzik of Struthers, while Phil Albenze, owner of Austintown’s Body by Phil Fitness Center, will take on former Harlem Globetrotter Wayne “Rare Air” Clark in the other pairing.
“Both heavyweight masters match-ups are very intriguing to me for a variety of reasons,” Loew said. “Tony [Scandy] is no stranger to the Masters Division, having already defended his title on three other occasions, so prepping for a fourth belt is paramount for him as he kicks up his training. Jamie [Rudzik], on the other hand, is big, strong and physical, yet no stranger to the ring. Both fighters have worked extremely hard for this opportunity, and all indications are it should be an exciting fight.”
Albenze, who always finds a way to get his clientele in shape, is a well-oiled machine who must now transfer his winning ways into the ring when he takes part in a Mahoning Valley first, hosting the 49-year-old Clark, a former guard for the Harlem Globetrotters who graduated from Georgia State University. Clark also played collegiately at Perimeter College and had professional hoop stints in Canada, Mexico, Romania and the USA.
“Phil [Albenze] is a former bodybuilder and well-conditioned athlete who is passionate about the game of boxing,” Loew said. “He will need to be in condition when he goes up against Wayne, a newcomer to the ring whose brains and brawn have been featured on 60 Minutes as part of its chess boxing coverage.”
Vass ran his record to 13-1 the last time out after scoring a unanimous decision over Connor Bollinger of Ellwood City at Loew’s Outside the Lion’s Den fight card at Penguin City Brewery on May 17.
He goes up against his good friend, John Davis of Golden String Boxing in the night’s co-main.
“This is a bout that really excites me because it highlights both the Southside Boxing Club and Golden String Boxing Club,” Loew said. “Both fighters are more than familiar with one another. They’ve sparred together and are great, up-and-coming young men. It could very easily be the fight of the night and definitely a bout that I am looking forward to watching.”
Vass shares Loew’s enthusiasm and the opportunity to be showcased.
“I am excited for this fight and glad that Jack picked someone like John [Davis] to push me to the limit,” Vass said. “He is an excellent fighter, and I respect him, but once we get into the ring that friendship goes out the window. I am looking forward to a great fight, and may the best man win.”
The evening will also mark the ring return for Peeples after a two-year absence.
“When you talk about a conditioned athlete, especially one who has been away from the game for two years, you are talking about Antwone Peeples,” Loew said. “He is one of the most dedicated fighters ever to enter the ring, and someone who works relentlessly at his craft. I count myself among those in a large group excited to see him back in action.”
Doors open at 6 p.m. with limited ringside seats available for $50 and tables of eight priced at $400. General admission tickets are $25.
