The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the nominees for its Player of the Month awards for September. India captain Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza have made the men’s shortlist after strong white-ball performances.
The women’s shortlist features Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu and India left-arm spinners Sree Charani and opener Shafali Verma. The six nominees were recognised for their performances in the Women's Asia Cup, Asian Games and bilateral series during September.
Shubman Gill earned his fifth ICC Player of the Month nomination after scoring 333 runs in two ODIs against the West Indies. He scored 110 in the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram before hitting his second ODI double century, 223 off 133 balls, in the second match.
Abhishek Sharma also made the shortlist after scoring 229 runs in four T20Is. He smashed 108 off 34 balls against Afghanistan at the Ferozeshah Kotla. Sharma broke Rohit Sharma’s record of a 35-ball century and also recorded the fastest T20I century by a batter from an ICC Full Member nation.
Sikandar Raza impressed during the home ODI series against Australia. He scored 183 runs in three matches, including 57, 45 and an unbeaten 81, at a strike rate of 92.89. He also took three wickets at an economy rate of 5.46. In three T20Is during the month, Raza added 90 runs and took two wickets.
Women's Nominees Feature Asia Cup and Asian Games Stars
Chamari Athapaththu had an impressive month with both bat and ball. The Sri Lanka captain scored 226 runs at a strike rate of 140.37 in seven T20Is and took 14 wickets. She helped Sri Lanka reach the finals of both the Women’s Asia Cup and the Asian Games.
Athapaththu was her team’s leading run-scorer and joint-leading wicket-taker at the Asian Games. Her best performance in the Women’s Asia Cup came against Indonesia, when she took seven wickets for five runs, including a hat-trick.
Sree Charani took 18 wickets in seven T20Is in September at an economy rate of 3.30. She took 2/13 in the Asian Games final and then reached 817 rating points, the highest-ever mark in the ICC Women’s T20I Bowling Rankings. Charani was also nominated for the award in June.
Shafali Verma scored 360 runs at a strike rate of 184.61 during the month. She finished as the leading run-scorer in the Women’s Asia Cup campaign and also took six wickets. At the Asian Games, she scored an unbeaten 100 against Bangladesh in the semi-final and 48 against Sri Lanka in the final.
Fans To Decide ICC Player Of The Month Winners
The winners will be decided through votes from an independent ICC Voting Academy and fans around the world. Fans can vote for their preferred performers through the ICC’s official awards platform.
Shubman Gill is aiming for his first Player of the Month award after earning his fifth nomination, while Athapaththu is a three-time winner of the women’s award. Abhishek Sharma previously won the men’s award in September last year.
The September nominees have been recognised across different competitions, with Gill and Raza rewarded for their ODI performances, while Sharma stood out in T20Is. In the women’s category, Athapaththu, Charani and Shafali were recognised for their contributions.
