In the season opener, Alabama soccer beat Saint Louis 2-1 with a late goal in the 83rd minute from forward Larkin Thomason to seal the win.
“That was a great way to start the season. It wasn’t the prettiest game, but I thought we had some good moments,” head coach Wes Hart said. “Credit to Saint Louis, they made it very hard on us.”
Alabama led the game with 11 shots, with six on goal, compared to Saint Louis’ five with three on goal.
Alabama was hot to strike, scoring a goal in the eighth minute off forward Ashley Roni’s boot. For the remainder of the first half, Saint Louis held possession and took the advantage in some key stats, including six corners.
It wasn’t until after 80 minutes that the Billikens scored the equalizing goal. In the 83rd minute, Alabama defender Avery Brown fouled a Billiken in the box, leading to a Saint Louis penalty kick. Midfielder Jeanette Fieldsend sent the ball to the back of Alabama’s net, tying the game 1-1.
With just three minutes left in the game, Alabama was pushing for a goal to take back the lead. Saint Louis defender Camille Welker handled the ball in the penalty. Thomason stepped up to the spot and locked in Alabama’s win.
“It was disappointing to give the PK away with seven minutes left, but what an incredible response from our team,” Hart said.
