British star Angharad Evans is now three-for-three in championship records at the 2026 European Championships, lowering the 100 breast standard every time she has raced the event. After missing her own British record by just 0.01 seconds in the semifinals, Evans dropped 0.09 seconds in the final to stop the clock in 1:04.87.

Evans’ biggest strength continues to be her closing speed. She turned fourth at the 50 in 30.82, but came home in 34.05 — the fastest final 50 in the field by more than half a second. That split allowed her to erase the deficit and pull away from the field over the second half of the race. The swim further extends Evans’ lead as the fastest performer in the world this season and marks a significant progression from the British record she first set in 2024. She has now lowered the national standard by a total of 0.67 seconds, from 1:05.54 to 1:04.87.

Evans also moved up to No. 8 on the all-time performers list, surpassing Lydia Jacoby and Evgeniia Chikunova.

Most importantly, the swim gave Evans her first individual continental title and marked the latest step in a career that has faced much adversity. Evans swam at the University of Georgia for one season from 2021 to 2022 before returning home to the UK on the verge of quitting the sport entirely.

She reset at the University of Stirling and rediscovered her love for racing, kickstarting a a turnaround that showed in her results: she placed third in the 100 breast at the 2023 British Championships in a then lifetime best of 1:08.05. Just over a year later, she became the British record holder and an Olympic finalist, before capping 2024 with a silver medal in the women’s 4×100 medley relay at the World Short Course Championships — her first international medal.

Evans still has the 200 breast left on her schedule, where she is the top seed and subsequently the favorite to win.

Ireland’s Mona McSharry also set a new national record, shaving a tenth off the 1:05.51 she posted at the semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics. McSharry went on to win bronze in the finals of the event with a time of 1:05.59. On her race, the Tennessee Vol told the press that “it has been a long time since I hit that speed so to be able to punch faster, hopefully the 1:04 mark is not too far away.”
