Aaron Summers has been jailed for abusing a 15-year-old girl. The former Hobart Hurricanes cricketer will be behind bars for around 10 months. The former cricketer met the girl during a match in the Big Bash League (BBL) in Hobart in December 2017. Summers has reportedly abused the girl twice before he was presented in front of the court.
As per the report from The North West Star, Aaron Summers met the girl and her friends during the BBL, and they had talks while he was 21 then. The girl came to watch the match, and from there everything initiated. Later on in 2018, the pair spoke across the boundary before connecting on social media (Instagram and Snapchat).
As per Tasmanian Supreme Court Justice Helen Wood, Aaron Summers used his athlete profile to gain the attention of the girl, as at that time he was playing in the BBL and the PSL as well. After connecting in January 2018, they went on a date with Summers picking the girl up from school, and they went for a drive at night.
The former cricketer placed a duvet on the school floor before assaulting the girl twice. Thus, the cricketer was convicted as he assaulted her knowing that she was in Grade 9 or 10 and below the age of sexual consent.
"She was only 15"- Justice Wood on the convicted girl
Justice Wood stated while providing the judgement that the girl was 15 and she did not know the meaning of sex, and it was all the thing that the cricketer was interested in.
“She was only 15 and didn’t have the life experience to realise sex was all that he was interested in," the judge said.
Aaron Summers pleaded guilty in 2021
After abusing her, he did not stop there but used to blackmail her by sending her explicit pictures, as they finally had communication in early 2021. The cricketer pleaded guilty and faced two charges of sexually abusing a child and another charge of grooming a child to expose them to inappropriate content.
The former cricketer was sent back to Tasmania from the Northern Territory after serving jail time for similar offences. He spent three years and 11 months in prison in the Northern Territory after pleading guilty in 2021 to possessing and sharing child abuse material and trying to have sexual activity with a person under 16.
Apart from Summers, there were three boys known to the cricketer who were also involved in the crime. The victim dared to file a complaint as she came forward to the police in Tasmania in 2021.
The former Hobart Hurricanes cricketer also played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for Karachi Kings for one season and also became the first Aussie cricketer in December 2020 to play in a domestic cricket competition in Pakistan, after signing with Southern Punjab.
Aaron Summers never represented the Australia National Cricket Team and only featured in first-class and franchise games over his cricketing career. With his age now being 30, his cricketing career might have come to an end after ending up behind bars.
