Yacht Rock’s Yachtley Crew hits The Sound

There are plenty of yacht rock combos touring at the moment, but Yachtley Crew, who stop in at The Sound on Aug. 14, are in a league of their own. Performing dressed in signature white Captain’s uniforms, their covers of ’70s and ’80s Åsoft pop rock songs by the likes of Boz Scaggs, Hall & Oates or Looking Glass, are all top notch. Notably however, Yachtley Crew are also now recording artists in their own right, not only releasing updated versions of standards like “Come and Get Your Love” and “Magic,” but also excellent original songs such as “Pain of Losing You” and “Sex On The Beach,” which sound like they could’ve been hits in the era they emulate.

Black Heart back at the Casbah

The Black Heart Procession returns to The Casbah for a rare two-night stand on Aug. 14 and 15. Founded in 1997 by Pall Jenkins and Tobias Nathaniel, the duo uses a minimalistic approach with both piano lines and guitar work, alongside less conventional instruments such as a saw, for haunting, cinematic songs that get filed under indie rock, but also have elements of classical music. The Black Heart Procession recently reissued their debut album, “1,” with a single from it, “Look In My Eyes,” released to coincide with their current tour. That debut album is likely to feature heavily in the night’s set list, but whatever they play from their catalog will have their audience hanging on every note.

Sanders and some Brown Sugar at Vision

Folk singer Lisa Sanders celebrates the release of her latest album, “Daughter of the Rising Tide,” with a show at Vision: A Center for Spiritual Living on Aug. 15. A gifted tunesmith and storyteller, Sanders has built a solid following over the past three decades with heartfelt observational songs such as “Angels.” For this show, she will be joined by partner, Brown Sugar and a cast of backing musicians set to feature the likes of guitarist John Katchur and bassist Marcia Claire. Meanwhile, special guests will include Grammy-winning producer Kamau Kenyata, as well as Riston Diggs, Ashley E. Norton, and The Calamity Duo. Singer-songwriter fans who appreciate the likes of Steve Poltz or John Prine will find much to enjoy in Sanders music.

Latin sounds filter into The Quartyard

On Aug. 15, The Quartyard features a night of Latin rhythms, Noche de Cumbia, starring two of the Southland’s best practitioners of the genre, Los Angeles-based Wachiwara and San Diego’s Los Sleepwalkers. Both bands are excellent, but the nod here goes to the Sleepwalkers, who will be playing songs from their upcoming album, “Almas Perdidas.” Led by superb frontman Johnny Valenzuela, The Sleepwalkers’ dynamic performances are hard to beat, with a set list full of irresistible dance floor fillers sung in both Spanish and English. DJ’s Las Sucias will keep things jumping before and between sets.

Guitar hero Partick Yandall’s release party

Prolific guitarist Patrick Yandall hosts a release party for his new album, “Center of Unity,” at Humphreys Backstage Live on Aug. 16. While Yandall’s music falls under the instrumental “smooth jazz’ umbrella, in truth, much of his output is closer to modern R&B, with a touch of funk, making for a set sure to keep fans on their feet. Yandall is a wonderful guitarist with a lyrical sense to his playing. For this show, he will be backed by saxophonist Darryl Walker, keyboardist Rymand Entezari, bassist Nathan Brown and drummer Tony Lee, making for a great night out for anyone who appreciates great guitar work or smooth jazz in general

Standley Park’s free summer concerts continues

The free summer concert series at Standley Park continues on Aug. 16 with a performance from The Exit. A really good cover band highlighted by the keyboards of Michael Grossman, The Exit’s set list covers a lot of ground, mixing oldies, classic rock, 1960s hits and soul, for an afternoon of music that offers up something for just about everybody. The secret to the band’s sound is Grossman’s adept use of keyboards, which has him playing everything from The Zombies’ Hammond organ solos to Michael Jackson’s backing string sections and Earth, Wind & Fire’s horn charts.

Soul Asylum makes a stop at the Belly Up

Long-running Minneapolis-based group, Soul Asylum, stops in at the Belly Up Tavern on Aug. 16. Still featuring frontman Dave Pirner, the band is performing in advance of a new album, “MPLS Unplugged,” featuring songs from throughout their career. The current tour set list is a strong mix of vintage hits such as “Runaway Train” and “Somebody to Shove,” alongside more recent gems such as “The Only Thing I’m Missing.” Longtime fans can rest assured Pirner is in fine form on this road trip, with the band delivering a high-energy, crowd-pleasing set.

Tedeschi Trucks trucks on in to the Rady Shell

Husband and wife southern rockers The Tedeschi Trucks Band hit the Rady Shell on Aug. 16. Part of a tour in support of their latest album, “Future Soul,” the group is at the top of their game, with Susan Tedeschi’s fiery vocals perfectly matched to Derek Trucks’ inspired lead work. The new album features a great mix of barroom rock, country blues and vintage New Orleans-style rhythm and blues, the perfect soundtrack to a Sunday evening right on the water in Downtown San Diego. Opening the show will be Lukas Nelson, best known for his work with his band Promise of the Real and Neil Young.

Lori Bell flouts her flute

Virtuoso flautist Lori Bell plays at the Athenaeum on Aug. 17, as part of the venue’s free Monday lunchtime concert series. A gifted jazz musician, her most recent album, “Recorda Me: Remembering Joe Henderson,” showcases both her arranging skills and impressive musicianship. Bell can play anything, from classical to Latin jazz, with dazzling skill, so set list possibilities are practically endless, but if you haven’t had a chance to catch Bell in a live setting, this performance in one of the city’s best listening rooms is the perfect opportunity to do so.

Southern Rock’s next of kin hits Music Box

Southern rock has made a comeback in recent years, led in part by the children of the original musicians who created it. Such is the case with Duane Betts, who plays Music Box on Aug. 19. The son of Allman Brothers guitarist Dicky Betts, Duane has inherited his father’s melodic sense and way with a guitar. Currently on the road touring his latest album, “Isle of Hope,” Betts’ music is strong enough to stand on its own, but fans of the Allman Brothers will be happy to hear the apple has not fallen far from the tree.
