Amid the growing concerns around the Indian National Cricket Team for repeated injury crises, the head of BCCI's Center of Excellence (CoE), VVS Laxman, issued a few significant statements when the Indian cricket team was engaged in a practice match with Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo.
Laxman said that CoE is not the platform for injured players; it is a medium to enhance the performance of both men's and women's cricketers. His comments sound critical because of the current scenario surrounding the national cricket team, where injuries are becoming common incidents.
One by one, there are more than ten Team India cricketers who are currently dealing with Injuries and fitness-related issues. Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Varun Chakravarthy, Harshit Rana, and Sai Sudharshan are among the top-tier Indian talents who are healing their injuries without any proper deadlines for the comebacks.
Ahead of India's 2-match Test series against Sri Lanka, VVS Laxman expressed that the CoE aims to help the cricketers of the nation to polish their skills. Both men's and women's cricketers actively walk into the centre with the aim of improvement through the specially designed programmes.
As nowadays multiple players are sidelined because of multiple injuries, CoE often captures the headlines. Fans may be mistaken by assuming the Centre of Excellence is a rehabilitation centre for the injured cricketers, so Laxman clarified, "Centre of Excellence is not a rehabilitation centre. It’s a centre where we strive for excellence every day."
Injuries are part and parcel: VVS Laxman
The former Team India middle-order batter mentioned that injuries are part of the game, as every player works hard for every series, which requires precise handling.
"Injuries are part and parcel. From one series to another, a player works hard. Do you see an injury as part and parcel or take it negatively?" he added.
Why are there so many injuries? The question remains intact, but VVS Laxman did not want to blame any individual for that. He said that there is a brilliant coordination system in the Indian cricket ecosystem. Like Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan, they are the star performers of the current Indian cricket team, whose return to action is subject to fitness clearance.
The head of CoE highlighted that the entire system is going through a streamlined process, which is possible only through good communication.
"We do not like to use the word blame. There is brilliant co-ordination. Bumrah and Sai, there is an asterisk attached - subject to fitness clearance. They move from one stage to another. The communication is seamless," he stated.
We monitor 150 cricketers: VVS Laxman
Laxman also claimed they are monitoring about 150 cricketers, including both men and women. Ahead of major tournaments like the Asia Cup or any series, multiple players used to visit the facility in Bengaluru for training.
"We monitor 150 cricketers, women and men, through the year. The women's team has a fitness camp and then a skill camp before the Asia Cup. With the men's team, before a series, Gautam contacts us, a few players come here to upskill themselves and train," VVS Laxman said.
