Wantz came up for a one-off appearance last week when the Cubs designated Jameson Taillon for assignment. He threw two innings, allowing a run on three hits and a walk in a blowout win in St. Louis. Wantz tossed 27 pitches and wouldn’t have been available for a day or two, so the Cubs swapped him out for Jake Woodford. Both pitchers were stopgap additions pending the Cubs’ multiple acquisitions on deadline day.
This was the second MLB appearance of the season for the 6’4″ righty. Wantz had a similarly brief stint on the Rays’ roster in late June. He hasn’t had much of an MLB look since a three-year run in middle relief with the Angels from 2021-23. Wantz underwent elbow surgery midway through ’24 and missed most of last season. He has spent the bulk of this year in Triple-A between the two organizations, allowing a 5.88 ERA with a 22% strikeout rate and an 11.6% walk percentage over 49 innings.
