Pluribus season 2 is still a way away, but star Rhea Seehorn has already ruled out a potential storyline based on what we saw in the season 1 finale.
The sci-fi series from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan saw Seehorn's character Carol suddenly forced to navigate a world where almost every other human has been transformed into a synchronised hive mind.
Throughout the series, it's revealed that Carol can ask for anything she likes from the 'others' (shown most dramatically when she asks for an atom bomb in the final episode).
However, in one case they found a big loophole. While Carol explicitly tells them not to harvest stem cells from her body, she later learns the others have got hold of the eggs she froze years prior, which is all they need to 'convert' her to the hive mind – but it seems she can't just demand them back.
"I don’t think I could just demand the eggs back, and I did ask about that, because their imperative is to infect — the coarse way to say it," Seehorn explained to Deadline.
View Green Video on the source website"That’s the argument that Carol keeps having with Zosia. 'If you’re saying I have agency and you love me, then don’t do this.' She’s saying, 'It’s because I love you that I have to.'"
She added: "But also, Vince sometimes would talk about it. It’s like parental love. He would say, 'Manipulating your child into wearing a coat to go outside. Is that manipulation or is that love, if you know it’s what’s best for them, to get them to eat vegetables or whatever?'
"And it’s that built into their system that for the others, this is an act of love. And so, if loving people is the greatest thing, then you can’t stop doing that. So, if she thinks stealing my eggs can eventually get my DNA to change me, then she’s never going to stop."
A writers' room is currently underway for season 2, with Gilligan saying in June this year: "We’re about a little past the halfway point. My writers and I have figured out the episodes, and it always – every season on every show – starts out hard.
"And then you just stay with it long enough. I’m starting to get to the point where I’m thinking, I’m looking forward to shooting this, and people seeing it, because I’m kind of digging it."
Seehorn previously offered her own season 2 update in an exclusive Radio Times interview, saying the writers were "working their butts off" and admitting they were "sweating it" as they attempted to follow up the acclaimed first run.
It may be a while before Pluribus returns to our screens – but somehow, we think it'll be worth the wait.
