The NCAA has announced a change to backstroke ledges following the approval of the Division II and Division III Playing Rules Oversight Panel two weeks ago, which allows for the backstroke ledge to be adjustable to four centimeters above or four centimeters below the water level and must be maintained within this eight-centimeter range.
Division I had approved the change prior to Division II and III making the approval.
According to the NCAA, the ledge “shall be a minimum of 60 centimeters in length, 8 centimeters in height, and 2 centimeters at the width with 10 degrees of slope.” The rule also aligns with that of both USA Swimming and World Aquatics.
Along with the new backstroke ledges changes, the NCAA has added new language to both the butterfly and freestyle finishing rules, both of which, similar to the backstroke ledge change, align with USA Swimming and World Aquatics.
2-2.3.e Butterfly: Add language ‘Additionally, once some part of the head of the swimmer has passed the final 5-meter mark (long course and short course meters) or 5-yard mark (short course yards), immediately prior to reaching for the finish, the swimmer may be completely submerged.
