Because of the incoming storm this weekend — and because the Phillies and Padres are being buttheads about just playing this series at Wrigley Field — the Cubs and Red Sox have a doubleheader tomorrow. The first game is at 12:05 CT and the second will kick off at 5:05 CT. The Red Sox have not yet announced who will start those games against the Cubs, but the Cubs have made their decisions.
In Game 1 of the doubleheader tomorrow, Clay Holmes will get the ball for his first start in what will be one full week. And good thing, perhaps, because after four *excellent* starts in a row shortly after joining the Cubs at the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline, he’s hit a bit of a wall:

Hopefully, the extra time off does him some good, because until very recently, Holmes was the most obvious Game 1 starter the Cubs had. Now? Not so much. That command is shaky. And while the groundball rate remains excellent, you can’t just ignore 16 earned runs over three starts. At this point, even if he is great tomorrow, he’s not likely getting the ball in the first game of the just-clinched Wild Card series regardless of opponent. But that’s mostly because of timing. After throwing tomorrow, normal rest for Holmes would be Game 2.
Now, even that would be fine (Game 2 is guaranteed) … if Kevin Gausman didn’t also hurt his (non-throwing) shoulder at the end of yesterday’s impressive outing against the Marlins. Alas. That’s just the nature of this Cubs season. We’ll figure it out next week is the best I can offer.
Holmes has not yet faced the Red Sox this season.
In the second half of the doubleheader, David Peterson will get the ball. And he has been pretty great lately. He had one blowup outing against the Brewers four games ago, but since then has allowed only three earned runs over 16.1 IP. His groundball rate is also excellent and the strikeouts have even come around. As a matter of fact, he’s been borderline excellent for the Cubs since he was acquired in late June. There were two bad outings (7.1 IP) accounting for 16 of his 33 earned runs allowed. In his other 12 starts and 68.0 IP, he has a 2.25 ERA.
He’s been so good, in fact, that he has a case to get a playoff start himself. He probably won’t (I’m assuming the Cubs plan to go with Gausman, Holmes, and Matthew Boyd), but he’s earned it. Of course, even if he doesn’t start, the Cubs will likely bring him into games for meaningful innings. Good guy to have around. And someone the Cubs should probably consider re-signing this offseason.
Peterson has also not faced the Red Sox this year.
And for what it’s worth, the Red Sox have been much better against lefties (106 wRC+, 7th in MLB) than they have against righties (98 wRC+, 22nd in MLB).
To that end, the Cubs may have clinched this afternoon, but they still have plenty for which to play. Namely, if they are able to finish at least tied with the Phillies and Padres, the Cubs will secure WC1, which would given them home field advantage for the entire Wild Card series. That’s why the Padres and Phillies are reportedly throwing a fit about these games being played at Wrigley in the first place. As of this moment, the Cubs are a half-game behind the Padres (who are playing tonight at 9:00 CT) and a half-game ahead of the Phillies, who are tied late in their game.

Oh, I almost forgot: There’s a chance the Cubs will play both games tomorrow in Boston before traveling to Tampa to play their finale there on Saturday. It’s a mess and no one really knows right now how exactly it’ll play out. We’ll let you know.
