After the success of previous instalments centred on Jeffrey Dahmer, Lyle and Erik Menendez and Ed Gein, Ryan Murphy's Monster anthology series is returning for a fourth season exploring its "first female monster" – and Netflix have just released a first look.
It was revealed last year that the fourth season of the Monster series would centre on the case of Lizzie Borden, who was tried and acquitted of the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother, which took place in Fall Rivers, Massachusetts.
Well, in the first-look pictures for the series, it seems as though the show will continue on in its dark and eerie vein, showing series star Ella Beatty covered in blood as Lizzie. Other images show Rebecca Hall (Passing) sipping wine as Lizzie’s stepmother, Abby, whilst another shows Monster season 3 face, Vicky Krieps, as the Bordens' live-in maid, Bridget Sullivan.
Finally, series 3 star Charlie Hunnam can be seen standing in a funeral parlour as Lizzie's father Andrew Borden, with Oliver Spencemen as a character named Stephen.
View oEmbed on the source websiteIt's also been confirmed that Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story will be landing on Netflix on 17 September – so we don't have long to wait for the true crime drama at all.
And whilst it wasn't previously known what angle the series would hone in on the case at, a synopsis has now been revealed which points at Monster characterising Lizzie as "an icon".
It reads: "When the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family and her rebellious maid find themselves trapped in a house built on humiliation and cruelty, they escape into a fantasy of sex, power, and revenge.
"The gruesome unsolved murders that follow don’t just shock the world — they give birth to an icon who refuses to live imprisoned in a cage, choosing instead to forge her own legend: shocking, monstrous, and gloriously free.
"Murphy and Brennan’s groundbreaking anthology series returns with its fourth and wildest installment yet. Monster: The Lizzie Borden Storytells the story of how one young woman changed what the world believed a killer could be. All it took was an axe."

On the new series, Beatty told Tudum: "I am so excited for viewers to experience our exploration of Lizzie Borden’s story and the questions that her life animates to this day.
"It has been a dream come true to investigate this complicated person’s psychology and to examine an American crime that feels almost mythic in proportion. This season gives us our first female Monster and delves into female rage and repression which I’ve found to feel strikingly relevant. I cannot wait to share it with the world."
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story comes to Netflix on 17 September.
