The 2026-27 UEFA Women’s Champions League is underway and Matchday 1 delivered a little bit of everything.
There were narrow wins, thrashings and end-to-end contests as Europe’s elite began their quest for continental glory.
Using Opta data, we break down the standout performers and biggest talking points from the opening matchday of this season’s UWCL.
Manchester City Continue To Find a Way
The reigning WSL champions began their UWCL campaign with one of the toughest assignments possible, travelling to Munich to face a Bayern side ranked second in the Opta Power Rankings.
The contest delivered everything expected of two European heavyweights: goals, a missed penalty and late drama, with the points ultimately shared in a 2-2 draw.
In doing so, City became the first English side to avoid defeat at Bayern Munich in the UWCL.
It was the first time in City’s history in the competition they had avoided defeat when trailing by two or more goals, while it was just the second time Bayern had failed to win a UWCL game in which they had led by 2+ goals, last doing so against Roma in November 2023.
José Barcala’s team asserted themselves early, racing into a two-goal lead before the break. Their aggressive pressing forced City into mistakes, with Bayern recording 16 high turnovers.
Since 2019-20, only against Barcelona in December 2024 (25) and March 2021 (17) have City conceded more high turnovers in the competition.
City struggled to gain a foothold before half-time, managing only three attempts. But Beth Mead’s goal shifted the momentum after the interval.
The visitors were then handed a golden opportunity to level from the penalty spot, only forCarlotta Wamser found the equaliser to complete the comeback with her first goal in light blue, and secure a valuable point on the road.
Andrée Jeglertz’s influence from the bench again proved significant, as had been the case against Liverpool.
Second-half substitute Wieke Kaptein to secure all three points, but were pushed far harder than many expected.
Chelsea’s 13 shots were their fewest in a UWCL match against a non-European elite opponent (Barcelona, OL Lyonnes, Bayern Munich, VFL Wolfsburg, Arsenal and Manchester City), since recording nine against Real Madrid in December 2024.
More concerningly, they allowed Austria Wien 15 attempts on goal, with only PSG (19) and Montpellier (17) ever taking more shots against Chelsea in Europe among sides outside the continent’s established heavyweight clubs.
Stefan Kenesei’s side had nine second-half shots, five of them on target, and repeatedly tested Chelsea’s back line. Indeed, only Paris FC (14) and Servette (nine) faced more shots on target on MD1 than the six Chelsea allowed.
Much of Austria Wien’s threat came through Modesta Uka. The forward was a constant threat throughout, registering five shots, more than any other player in the match, while her 0.34 xG was also a team high.
Despite being handed the toughest average opposition in the league phase based on the pre-tournament Opta Power Rankings, Austria Wien can take plenty of encouragement from their opening performance.
Chelsea still had some standout performers despite an underwhelming team display.
Damaris Egurrola controlled proceedings from midfield. No player in the UWCL this season has won more duels than her (14), while she also led all players for passes ending in the final third (49 attempted, 38 completed).
The result also extended Servette’s misery in the competition. The Swiss side have now lost each of their last nine UWCL matches, their longest losing streak in the tournament.
Barcelona also began with a big win, but their evening was rather less comfortable than Lyon’s, at least initially.
Paris FC stunned the Spanish champions after just five minutes through summer signing Evelyne Viens, who carried her strong European form into another campaign after scoring five of Roma’s nine UWCL goals last season. The strike also extended her scoring streak in the competition to three consecutive appearances.
Barcelona’s response, however, was swift and emphatic.

By full-time, the reigning Spanish champions had powered to a 5-2 victory, showcasing the attacking firepower that continues to make them one of Europe’s most prolific teams.
Hansen was once again at the heart of everything Barcelona produced. The Norwegian finished with a goal and two assists, matching Ewa Pajor’s tally of three goal involvements on the night. Hansen has now registered a goal involvement in each of Barcelona’s opening four Liga F matches this season and continued that form into Europe.
Her creativity was particularly eye-catching. Hansen created six chances, more than any other player on MD1 alongside Bayern Munich’s Klara Bühl.
Meanwhile, Pajor’s brace means she has now scored in six consecutive UWCL appearances, netting nine goals during that run, the longest scoring streak of her European career.
Barcelona’s overall attacking display was as impressive as the individual performances.
Their 14 shots on target were the most across all sides on MD1, boasting a 70% shooting accuracy (14/20), the most any Barcelona side has ever achieved in a single game in the competition where they have attempted 10+ shots.
Real Madrid and PSG’s Basketball Affair
Real Madrid once again found themselves facing Parisian opposition on the European stage. Since making their UWCL debut in 2021, Madrid have been drawn against a team from the French capital in every group stage or league phase campaign bar one.
