Russell Mark has been hired as Brown University swimming and diving’s High Performance Consultant. There, he will reunite with his former colleague Mitch Dalton who was announced as the program’s new head coach in July.
The two previously worked together at USA Swimming, where Dalton served as the National Junior Team Director from 2015 through 2020 and Mark served in various high performance roles from 2002 through 2021.
After leaving USA Swimming, Mark took a role with the American Swimming Coaches’ Association (ASCA), and has also worked in various freelancing gigs. That includes at the 2025 World Championships, where World Aquatics made Mark’s biomechanical analysis available to athletes from developing nations who typically lack access to that level of performance analysis.

A member of USA Swimming’s High Performance Staff at every Olympic Games from 2004–2020, Russell has helped Olympic champions, World Championship medalists, and world record holders maximize performance through race analysis, biomechanics, and technical expertise. His impact on the sport has made him one of the most respected high-performance minds in swimming.
Russell’s partnership is another example of Brown’s continued investment in providing our student-athletes with resources typically found at the highest levels of the sport.
It’s one more step in our commitment to building a program that pairs a world-class Brown education with world-class performance support. We will give our student-athletes every opportunity to compete with the nation’s best.
The Brown women finished 4th out of 8 teams at the 2026 Ivy League Championship meet, while the men finished 6th out of 8 teams. For the Brown women, that was a fourth-straight year of finishing in 4th place, while the men had their lowest finish since 2019.
Brown has never won a men’s Ivy League Championship, one of only two current Ivy League teams (along with Dartmouth) to never top the team table. The Brown women have won five championships all-time: three straight from 1983-1985 and two straight in 1998 and 1999.
Mark was a member of the swim team at the University of Virginia from 1997-2001, where he majored in aerospace engineering. He began his career working as an engineer for experimental military jets at Pratt & Whitney before moving into swimming.
He is the latest of an increasing trend of swimming & diving programs adding performance and data analytics roles to their staffs. Virginia hired Logan Redondo in a similar role prior to last season.
