ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Naples man who was bed-ridden for nearly three years and told he may never walk again walked himself out of a rehab center in Rochester on Friday.
A collision of catastrophes with his body made Brad McGovern bed bound. Then, he experienced some personal issues, “I was giving up on life, I lost four family members within six months,” McGovern told News10NBC’s Jennifer Lewke.
He was sent from the hospital to Lilac Manor in Rochester for rehabilitation.
“Every day you could see him coming out of his shell more and more, he was very shy when he first came here but every day, he came in with a smile and was always ready to work,” explains Lauren Schlosser, the assistant director of rehab at Lilac Manor.
McGovern wasn’t sure whether he’d ever be able to get out of his wheelchair. “There’s tough days and then there’s good days ya know,” McGovern says.
But after 99 days of rehab, he got up and out of that chair and walked down the hallway to the door on Friday. He rang the bell to celebrate his success—a success he wasn’t sure would ever come. “It felt really liberating, really good,” McGovern said.
McGovern credits the therapists who led his rehab, “they’re basically angels here on earth…They pushed me just enough to get me back on my feet,” he says.
“I am so excited for him, he has worked so hard for all of this, and I am super proud of him,” Schlosser said as she watched McGovern drive off with his father and brother.
