Strangers on a Train, Highsmith's first book, inspiredAlfred Hitchcock's 1951 film. In an interview with filmmaker François Truffaut, Hitchcock, who died in 1980 at 80, revealed that he had wanted to adapt Highsmith's novel, which he described as "alright."
"I chose that," said Hitchcock.
During the interview, Hitchcock said he was "genuinely pleased with the general shape of the picture." However, he said that there were some aspects of the film he was unsatisfied with. The late director suggested that he wasn't pleased with Farley Granger's portrayal of Guy Haines and Ruth Roman's portrayal of Anne Morton. He said he believed that the film's script could have benefited from "a stronger characterizations on the part of the leading people."
"I think the faults of Stranger in the Train lie in the lack of strengths of the two leading people. And not good enough final writing," said Hitchcock.
The 1951 film version of Stranger in the Train has a score of 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
