Hawthorn Mall in the north suburbs will soon look different as it undergoes a “major interior refresh” as part of a redevelopment plan already under that’s set to transform the 53-year-old mall.
Real estate firm and mall owner Centennial described the part of the plan to evolve the mall, in suburban Vernon Hills, “into a modern mixed-use destination.”
“These enhancements will create more inviting spaces for guests to gather, relax, dine, and connect with the community and our growing retail partners,” Sam Whitebread, Vice President of Development at Centennial said in a release. “We’re investing in an experience that reflects how people want to shop and spend time today while building on Hawthorn’s longstanding role as a central gathering place for Lake County.”
The transformation will include upgraded family amenities including a redesigned Kids Zone, new lounge seating, “enhanced dining environments,” the release said. The mall will look and feel different too, with warmer natural materials, integrated greenery and more modern furnishings and lighting.

The new look is expected to be completed by fall of 2026, the release said. Other elements of the redevelopment, including construction of a new entrance, are estimated to begin in 2027.
“The project is part of Hawthorn’s broader transformation into a modern mixed-use destination,” the release said. “Following the success of Hawthorn Row, which opened in 2024 welcoming Anthropologie, FP Movement, Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille, Yard House, and more to come, the property continues to evolve with new investments, including AMC Hawthorn 12’s newly added IMAX auditorium and Tricoci’s MedSpa addition that opened this June.”
A report from The Daily Herald said the estimate for the interior refresh project stands at $5 million.
